There are currently three mobile operators in Austria:

  • A1  Telecom Austria
  • Magenta  Telekom (formerly T-Mobile)
  • 3  (= «Three»)

Orange and “3” merged into one network in 2013 and the Orange brand was removed, but scans still show two different “3” networks. In May 2019, T-Mobile was renamed Magenta Telekom as a result of a merger with cable company UPC. In addition, all networks have many sub-brands and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs).

Mobile coverage is excellent for a country with a complex terrain like Switzerland, at a very high level. In 4G/LTE, all three networks cover >=98% of the population. Non-standalone 5G/NR was launched on all three networks in 2019/2020. Prepaid subscribers can only access 5G through selected tariffs on all three networks. Since September 2022, Drei “3” is the only operator offering standalone 5G for individuals in the country. Standalone 5G will only become available to prepaid customers at the end of 2024. This article follows the historical order used in the country and is not a ranking.

Data speeds in Austria are among the lowest in Central Europe, largely due to the proliferation of unlimited data packages designed for mobile broadband, due to the relative lack of fast or inexpensive fixed broadband connections, especially in rural areas.

A prepaid SIM card is locally called a ”  Wertkarte  “. This is a specific Austrian expression that is not used in other German-speaking countries.

Even though there are plans specifically designed for phones or routers, you can use any plan on any device without restrictions. This means you can use a combined plan with talk, text, and data with a router or an internet-only plan with a phone.

Please note that the small counters at Vienna International Airport with the Wowww! branding charge an excessive fee for registering Wowww! SIM cards, which can be as high as €40. At Vienna International Airport, you can visit the Billa supermarkets in Terminal 1 (5:30 AM to 8:00 PM) and Terminal 3 (6:00 AM to 10:00 PM), the Bipa store in Terminal 3 or the SIM Local store in Terminal 3, which sells Drei, Eety and Lycamobile SIM cards. Alternatively, you can visit a shop in the city. If you are travelling by the city airport train, the S7 line of the Vienna City Railway or the REX 7 regional express from Vienna International Airport to Vienna Mitte, the Wien Mitte shopping centre has the A1, Magenta and Drei stores, as well as Interspar, MediaMarkt and Libro. If you take the S-Bahn line S7 or the regional express REX 7 from Vienna International Airport to Rennweg station, there is a Lidl in the small shopping center above the station, as well as a Drei and Bipa store a short walk away at the intersection of Rennweg and Ungargasse. If you take the ÖBB Railjet to Vienna Main Station, there are Interspar, Libro, Billa and Bipa at the train station, and a MediaMarkt in the Columbus shopping center at 1100 is a 5-minute walk away.

The country code for Austria is +43. Mobile phone numbers begin with a three-digit area code starting with the number 6, followed by the subscriber number, which is 7 to 9 digits long.

Energy saving

All operators use a power saving mode between 00:00, 01:00 and 06:00 AM, which means that bands 3 and 7 may not be available in all regions during these hours. If you want to use the A1 or Magenta network in the morning, a device with band 20 (+ band 8 for Magenta) is strongly recommended, while for the Drei network a device with bands 1 and 8 is also recommended. Expect reduced speeds during these hours, even if your device supports bands 1, 8 and 20.

SIM card registration in Austria

In Austria, SIM cards have had to be registered since July 2019 in order to be activated. In the country, branded stores of major providers offer registration for free or for a minimal fee. Often, partner stores or post offices also offer registration, but may charge up to 10 euros. Most brands can also be registered through an online verification process similar to the German one. Please note that not all brands accept all foreign IDs for online registration.

These visitors are better off going to a branded store.

EU citizens can try  Foto-Identifikation,  which is now available online for most brands. You will need a reliable internet connection and a camera for this process, as you will need to upload a photo of your ID and a selfie to register. In both cases, these registration methods can be done via Wi-Fi hotspots (as in Germany, they are locally called WLAN, not WiFi), which are available in many public places. Keep in mind that SIM cards sold in supermarkets, gas stations and tobacconists cannot always be registered there and may only have online verification available. Be prepared to go to the provider’s store, post office or register online.

Top up your account in Austria

Online top-up vouchers are available for most networks on  onlineaufladen.at  without additional fees. Please note that if you want to use your credit or debit card on this website, payment is possible with Mastercard Securecode , Verified by Visa , Diners Club and Maestro cards that are enabled with Mastercard Securecode . Visitors from some EU countries can also use their online bank account to top up. As this is limited to certain countries and banks, please check in advance whether your country is in the drop-down menu. You also need to be able to receive text messages on your home SIM card, so if you do not want to connect it to a network in Austria, this method will not work. With the increasing popularity of app-based multi-factor authentication for bank transfers, this issue has become obsolete in recent years. If you check your transactions via a banking app rather than SMS, this method will still work for you, even without an Austrian network connection. The minimum top-up amount is usually 10 euros.

To top up your account, most Austrian retailers do not sell scratch cards, but issue a paper receipt with a PIN. This usually involves either getting a label, as shown  here  , or asking the cashier to give you  a Ladebon  (= top-up voucher) for your operators. You will be given a paper receipt with a voucher PIN, which you need to enter on your phone or online.

Some Austrian operators have introduced an inactivity fee if you do not use your plan. This makes it difficult to keep your SIM card when it is suspended, as the recharged credit will be used up for no benefit. Typically, most Austrian SIM cards remain active for a year without being used or recharged. Because of this inactivity fee, it is better to exhaust your balance before putting it on a longer pause.

Price comparison with the rest of the world

The British internet traffic comparison site cable.co.uk ranked Austria 46th out of 237 countries/territories and 8th in the OECD (36 countries) for mobile data availability, with an average data cost of €0.47 (approximately $0.51) per GB (July 2023). This means that prices in Austria are around $2.10 per GB lower than the global average. (  source  )

Roaming in the EU

Austria is part of the EU, where new international roaming rules have been in effect since 2017. In most European countries, you can now “roam like at home” at domestic rates, rather than excessive roaming charges. For details on the new regulation, see the section on

European Union, section and each supplier below, as these rules have been implemented in a special way in Austria.

Austrian operators have partially undermined EU regulations to “protect” domestic Austrian tariffs. Some prepaid plans block either roaming in general or data roaming. This means that they only work in Austria and are therefore not subject to EU regulations. These restrictions apply to almost all data-only mobile broadband plans (except for  the Drei Wertkarte zum Surfen  ) and to some of the cheapest prepaid MVNO plans. If you want to use your Austrian SIM card in another EU country where roaming is available, choose the option with EU roaming enabled from the start. Because either you will not be able to switch from a domestic-only plan to an EU-roaming-enabled plan during the validity period of the domestic-only plan, or switching early will result in the loss of the remaining validity period of the domestic-only plan.

All plans that allow roaming outside Austria according to EU rules are subject to a strict fair usage policy (FUP). Only a certain part of the included domestic data volume in the packages can be used without additional costs. This part is marked as “EU Data” in each table. It is taken from the domestic package and should not be considered as an additional charge. In addition, strict time rules apply against “permanent roaming”. This means that your Austrian provider will ask you to provide “stable connections” to Austria if you are roaming abroad for more than 3 or 4 months (depending on the provider). If you cannot provide these connections, you will be charged an “abuse factor” and all roaming without additional costs will be canceled. Magenta and its budget brand S-Budget-Mobile require everyone to prove “stable connections” to Austria in order to use roaming in the EU, which is impossible for tourists.

So, roaming on Austrian SIM cards in the EU/EEA generally remains more expensive than domestic use in Austria, despite the EU’s “Roam like at home” rules. The cheapest Austrian phone packages and almost all data-only mobile broadband packages are designed for domestic use only, while other more expensive packages have strict roaming restrictions. At least the additional charges are limited by EU rules. If you exceed the usage limits in 2024, you may be charged a maximum of €1.55 per GB extra (billed in MB increments) if you have domestic data left in your plan.

Austrian market leader A1 was one of the first networks in Europe to start excluding the UK from its EU/EEA roaming zone without a surcharge in 2021. After Brexit, the UK is no longer part of EU roaming regulations and can now charge a surcharge without legal restrictions, but most EEA providers continue to consider the UK as still part of the EEA. A1 and its budget brands started charging a significant surcharge for all roaming in the UK from the summer of 2021. Since the beginning of 2022, Drei’s budget ranges (eety and Lidl-Connect) have started to treat the UK as a Zone 1 country. Since August 2022, Drei has treated the UK as a Zone 1 country. Therefore, your best options are to use any Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) based on the Magenta network or to use the rather unreliable Lyca Mobile service if you plan to use an Austrian SIM card in the UK.

Disabling 2G and 3G

  • Magenta Telekom’s complete 3G shutdown:  Magenta Telekom’s 3G network ceased operations throughout Austria on June 11, 2024, shortly before 10:30 p.m. The 3G shutdown occurred in stages, starting with small trail areas at the end of 2023, and every two weeks in larger areas from April 5. After the final shutdown, the 3G network was switched off in Vienna, most of Lower Austria, and most of Burgenland. Ultimately, Magenta broadcast 3G on 5 MHz in band 8.  Magenta announced the shutdown of its 3G network in April 2022.  Since then, Magenta has reallocated 3G spectrum in band 8 for additional 4G/LTE capacity and upgraded its small cells to 4G/LTE.
  • Drei Austria 3G shutdown (full)  : Drei’s 3G network ceased operations throughout Austria on 2 April 2025. The 3G shutdown was carried out in stages. Initially, Drei customers lost access to national 3G roaming from Magenta when Magenta Telekom’s 3G network was shut down in the first half of 2024. Drei then shut down its own 3G network. The first shutdown occurred in parts of Styria, Burgenland and Lower Austria on 22 October 2024. (  Source in German  ) Drei eventually broadcast 5 MHz of 3G in Band 1. Drei announced the shutdown of its 3G network in July 2023 (  Source in German  ). As of 14 May 2025, Drei had refarmed the 3G spectrum in Band 1 for additional 4G/LTE capacity.
  • 3G shutdown by A1 Telekom Austria (in progress)  : A1 announced that it will shut down its 3G network in Band 1 (2100 MHz) from February 2023 (starting in Carinthia and Salzburg). As of November 15, 2024, the final reconfiguration to 5G in Band 1 has begun (  Source: German-derstandard.at  ,  Source: German-lteforum.at  ). The final shutdown of the 3G network is ongoing. As of mid-May 2025, 3G is only available in Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol. It is planned that 3G will disappear from the A1 network by the end of June 2025 and will be replaced by 4G/LTE. Previously, 3G was planned to disappear by the end of 2024, and later by the beginning of 2025. (  Source on German-a1.net  ,  Source on German-newsroom.a1.net  ,  Source on German-lteforum.at  ,  Source on German-derstandard.at  )
  • 2G shutdown by A1 Telekom Austria (initial information):  In several documents regarding prepaid and postpaid tariff plans as of February 2025, A1 indicates that 2G availability can only be guaranteed until the end of 2027, and therefore 2G may be discontinued as early as 2028. (  Source in German  )
  • Austria’s 2G network shutdown, Drei  (initial information):  Drei briefly indicated that it would shut down its 2G network in 2023, but has since abandoned this plan (  Source in German  ). In its announcement of the 3G network shutdown, Drei now states that 2G will continue to provide basic coverage for voice services (  Source in German  ).

Network priority

All three networks use network management to prioritize plans over others. The strategy used depends on the network. In the A1 network, prepaid plans have a fairly low priority (for B.free it is equal to their budget postpaid plans and lower for other non-B.free prepaid plans). On the other hand, in the Magenta network, most prepaid plans have a higher priority than postpaid plans (with the exception of  HoT Internet  and  HoT Internet Plus plans  ). While in the 3 (“Drei”) network, prepaid plans have the same priority as equivalent legacy postpaid plans in terms of maximum data speed and category (mobile plans vs. data-only plans) and enjoy a higher priority compared to most modern postpaid plans.

A1  Telecom Austria

A1 Telekom Austria is still the largest telecommunications provider in the country with a very high standard:  the A1  4G/LTE coverage map is available in band 20 (800 MHz) nationwide, in band 3 (1800 MHz) in smaller and larger cities, and in band 7 (2600 MHz) in larger cities, covering 98% of the population. 4G+/LTE-A carrier aggregation is available at cell sites that broadcast multiple 4G/LTE bands. 5G/NR is available in band n1 (2100 MHz) and band n77/n78 (3410-3800 MHz) in non-standalone mode. 5G/NR is only available with selected tariff plans and additional options.

Roaming in the EU

EU roaming is only enabled for a few combined tariff plans. It is completely blocked for all other and all B.free Internet tariff plans. Please note that A1 applies restrictions on roaming usage by volume and time.

From 1 June 2021, the UK is no longer part of the EU roaming zone. When roaming in the UK, you will be charged at Zone 2 rates (€1.49  per 100 KB  ). That’s a whopping €14.90 per MB or €14,900 per GB.

A1 offers the following roaming packages:

  • The roaming package called “A1 Roaming Datenwoche L” gives you 1 GB of data for travel to 27 countries: Albania, Andorra, Angola, Argentina, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Greenland, Guernsey, Honduras, Isle of Man, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, Nicaragua, North Macedonia, Panama, Paraguay, Switzerland, Serbia, United Kingdom, Uruguay. Magenta  Telekom (formerly T-Mobile)

In May 2019, Deutsche Telekom changed the name of T-Mobile Austria to Magenta. The new operator is called Magenta Telekom and is considered the operator of the best 4G network and has good coverage in the country on the GSM network. On June 11, 2024, Magenta became the first network operator in Austria to completely abandon the 3G network. 4G/LTE is available in Band 20 (800 MHz) and Band 8 (900 MHz) throughout the country, as well as in Band 3 (1800 MHz) and Band 1 (2100 MHz) for smaller and larger towns and in Band 7 (2600 MHz) in larger cities. It covers 98.7% of the population. For more information, see  the basic coverage map  (different shades of magenta) or  the extended coverage map  (different colors and each technology can be displayed separately). 4G+/LTE-A carrier aggregation is available on cell sites that broadcast multiple 4G/LTE bands. 5G/NR is available on the n28 band (700 MHz), the n75 band (1500 MHz) on select devices only, the n1 band (2100 MHz) shared with 4G/LTE via DSS technology, and the n77/n78 band (3410-3800 MHz) in non-standalone mode. Non-standalone 5G/NR is available on select plans only.

Roaming in the EU  (roaming like at home is not available for tourists)

Roaming without additional charges in the EU, EEA and the UK is only available to persons with a permanent residence in Austria. If you work, study or mainly live in Austria, you can present proof of registration, a long-term employment contract or a declaration of main residence (= Meldezettel) to a Magenta store to access roaming like at home. This generally means that  tourists cannot use roaming like at home with Magenta prepaid tariffs, but tourists can instead purchase and use additional roaming services.

If you qualify, EU data roaming is available on all current  Mobile Klax plans  .

Roaming data for the EU, EEA and UK can be added with these add-ons:

  • Internet EU Small: 2 GB for 7 days for 7 euros
  • Internet EU Medium: 5 GB for 7 days for 10 euros

Available only for tariff plans with data roaming enabled.

3  Austria  (“3”)

Drei Austria (pronounced “drei”, pronounced “dry” (3)) was once the smallest network in the country until it was acquired and merged with Orange in 2013, becoming a very competitive player. On 2 April 2025, Drei became the second network operator in Austria to completely switch off its 3G network. 4G/LTE operates in Band 3 (1800 MHz) and Band 1 (2100 MHz) throughout the country, as well as in Band 8 (900 MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz) and Band 38 (2600 MHz TDD) in some areas, and covers 98% of the population. 4G+/LTE-A carrier aggregation is available on cell sites that broadcast multiple 4G/LTE bands (band 8 and band 38 cannot be used for 4G+/LTE-A carrier aggregation). 5G/NR is available in the n28 band (700 MHz) and n75 band (1500 MHz) in standalone mode, and in the n77/n78 band (3410-3800 MHz) in both standalone and standalone modes. As of December 2024, both Drei’s regular 5G subscription plans and up³ hybrid subscription plans can use 5G in both standalone and standalone modes.

Their network coverage is considered to be somewhat behind that of A1 and Magenta, but is still very high, although they generally offer slightly lower tariffs. From 2024, all Drei customers will be able to benefit from a new active sharing agreement and a new regional roaming agreement between 3 and Magenta. This new active sharing agreement allows Magenta to deploy 3’s spectrum portfolios in the 700, 900, 1500 and 1800 MHz bands on a maximum of 400 cell sites. Using MOCN (multi-operator core network) technology, 3 and Magenta customers will be able to use the spectrum portfolios of both companies on these special active sharing cell sites. Active sharing will not apply to cell sites in Vienna, Graz and Linz. In addition, thanks to regional roaming, 3 network customers can also roam on selected Magenta cell sites in 4G/LTE.

Availability

The starter package costs 9.90 euros, and depending on the chosen plan, the package includes different units:

  • When choosing a mobile tariff  (Talk/Talk EU):  1000 minutes, 1000 SMS and 16 GB of traffic for the first 30 days (without roaming in the EU)
  • When choosing a data-only plan  (Surf Flat/Surf):  16 GB is available for the first 30 days (without roaming in the EU).

These starter packs are sold in Drei stores (list of stores) as well as in many agencies such as MediaMarkt, Libro, Hartlauer, BIPA (including the store at Vienna Airport), supermarkets, etc. The starter packs include the option for a standard, micro and nano SIM card.

You can get an eSIM, but only by replacing your SIM card at a Drei store. This applies to both new and existing lines, as there are no eSIM starter packages yet. Replacing a SIM card costs €20. This means that if you want to get a new line with an eSIM, you will need to pay a total of €29.90 (physical starter SIM card + SIM replacement). If you already have an active prepaid line, you only need to pay €20 for the SIM replacement.

Vouchers for top-up of 10, 20 or 40 euros can be found nationwide in supermarkets, tobacconists, petrol stations, etc. You can top-up online, in the “3 Kundenzone” app or by sending an SMS with the voucher code to 31321. You can check your balance online, in the “3 Kundenzone” app or by sending an SMS with the voucher code to 31321.

Replenishment by credit card is available.

If you use your prepaid SIM card’s internet connection, you don’t need a username and password to log in online or in the app.

The online setup wizard will prompt you to top up your SIM card, but you can ignore this message if you don’t want to top up right away. If you are in Austria for up to 30 days, you can only use the added blocks and never top up your SIM card.

If you choose a 5G/NR-enabled plan (e.g.  Talk EU XL  ), you will also be able to access 5G/NR with the data included in your starter package.

Registration

All SIM cards must be registered by August 31, 2019. This can be done at Drei Shops and at some retail outlets for a fee of up to 10 euros. Thanks to online  photo identification (Foto-Identifikation),  at least some foreigners can register online. For this process, you need an Austrian address (e.g. residential address), a device with a good camera, and a reliable internet connection. You need to upload a passport photo and a selfie, and hopefully you will be accepted. Otherwise, you need to go to your local Drei store.

up³ – hybrid app-based subscription

In addition to traditional prepaid products, Drei also offers hybrid prepaid up³ subscriptions. The main difference from a regular prepaid product is that it is a subscription with a fixed period of validity that needs to be suspended manually. The advantage is that these up³ subscription plans are cheaper compared to regular prepaid products. Since it is a prepaid product, you will need to register your new subscription plan, just like any other prepaid SIM card in Austria, using your passport, ID card or driver’s license.

You can order a new up³ plan through the up³ app or in a browser on your computer.

When you sign up, you create a four-digit customer code, which you should keep as you will need it later to pause your subscription plan.

The up³ app is available in German and English for Android 11 and higher, and iOS/iPadOS 15 and higher.

up³ subscriptions are available with eSIM (delivery via app) or with a physical SIM card. Physical SIM cards can only be delivered to an Austrian address. If you register for an up³ plan in a browser on your computer, you can choose between two options (eSIM or physical SIM card). Please note that when ordering an up³ plan in the app, you cannot select the type of SIM card you want, and the SIM card type will be determined automatically! If you want to order an up³ plan via the app, you need to download the app to the phone or tablet with which you want to use your plan. If you are asked to enter an address, this means that your device is not eSIM compatible (at least according to the app), and if you continue, a physical SIM card will be delivered to the address. If you want to use your subscription plan on an eSIM-compatible device that is not supported by the app (e.g. a laptop or a device with an older OS version), you can use the browser on your computer or other eSIM-compatible device with the app to activate the service, and then request a new QR code for the eSIM in the app settings. The same applies if you want to use your subscription plan on a non-eSIM-compatible device with a physical eSIM card from 5ber or eSIM.me. You can also activate your subscription plan on an eSIM-compatible device and exchange your eSIM for a physical SIM card at the Drei store for a fee of 10 euros. The exchange from a physical SIM card to an eSIM can be done for free in the app.

Payment is possible with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa and Mastercard credit/debit cards, and PayPal. During setup, your payment information will be verified by a temporary charge of €0.10 (the funds will be refunded automatically).

All subscription plans automatically renew a few days before the end of the monthly billing cycle unless paused five days before the end of the billing cycle in the app settings. You will need your four-digit customer code to pause your subscription! You can pause your subscription plan immediately after signing up. It is recommended that you pause your subscription plan immediately if you plan to use it for the next month or less. When you pause your subscription plan and the current billing cycle ends, you can resume it for the next 12 months. After 12 months of inactivity, your subscription plan will automatically be canceled.

You can only use the units included in your subscription plan unless you purchase an additional package (see additional details below). You can only purchase additional packages when your subscription plan is not paused.

Changing the tariff plan is only possible via the online chat in the application.

In addition to the above plans, there is also an up³ Internet plan   with 100/50 Mbps unlimited data on up to 5G/NR NSA/SA networks for €28.90 per month. However, this plan is only available with a new physical SIM card, which can only be sent to an Austrian address.

If you have an up³ subscription plan, you can add up to 99 additional lines, called  up³ Team additional lines. You can add any up³ subscription plan to your existing up³ subscription plan as an additional line. When you add an  up³ Unlimited  or  up³ Internet subscription plan  as an  up³ Team additional line,  you get them at a reduced price (€2 less) of €20.90 and €26.90 per month respectively. Each line has its own phone number with its own allocation of minutes, texts and data. When you suspend your main  up³ subscription plan, all up³ Team  additional lines   will also be suspended. However, when the main subscription plan is active, you can suspend each  up³ Team additional line  individually. You can manage these  up³ Team additional lines in the up³ app.

These plans have an automatic inflation adjustment feature built in. This means that if the average inflation rate during a calendar year exceeds 3%, the price of the plan may automatically increase the following year between April and December. This only applies to regular visitors.

You can find these subscription plans on the following page (in English):  https://www.drei.at/de/privat/produkte-und-services/up/up-english.html

Roaming in the EU

From August 2022, the UK is no longer part of the EU roaming zone. You will be charged the high Zone 1 rates when roaming in the UK.

Drei is known to use a timed FUP against permanent roaming in the EU. This means that after 3 months of roaming you will receive an SMS to confirm a stable connection to Austria, or you will face additional costs starting from the 4th month. This does not seem to apply to their standard  EU Klassik tariff  .

More information

  • Modem use allowed
  • APN: drei.at
  • The fair usage policy (FUP) for unlimited traffic is 5 TB (1 TB for plans purchased before 2020)
  • Switching between plans on a classic prepaid tariff (Talk and Surf tariffs) is possible, but if you are unable to switch to the desired plan online, you will need to visit a Drei Shop, call customer support, or send a personal message on social media.
  • Switching between up³ subscription plans is only possible via the live chat in the app.
  • By default, each row receives a private IPv4 address; IPv6 addresses are not available.
  • If you need a public IPv4 address on a classic prepaid tariff (Talk and Surf tariffs), you can enable the “Open Internet” option in  the 3rd client zone  (= 3rd client zone) in the “Settings” section (= Settings) -> “Data services and roaming” (= Data services and roaming).
  • If you need a public IPv4 address for your up³ subscription plans, you can request one via the online chat in the app.
  • VoLTE and VoWiFi are available for prepaid customers with a compatible phone. Please note that not all phones support VoLTE or VoWiFi for Drei. This is especially true if your phone is running older firmware and/or region-specific firmware. VoLTE and VoWiFi have been available for postpaid plans since 2018.

Yesss!  (from A1)

Yesss! is an A1 brand operating on the A1 network in 2G, 3G and since 2016 in 4G/LTE for all prepaid plans. From 2024, separate 5G/NR is available for select plans, and for mobile plans without 5G, an additional 5G package can be added for an additional fee (see Other data-related additional services (speed/technology) below).

Availability

The “Yesss!” starter packs  are sold for €1.99 and come with three SIM cards (standard, micro and nano). They contain 100 units in the form of minutes for domestic calls, SMS or megabytes of data, as well as 15 minutes for customer service calls and can be used within 15 days after activation.

Yesss! SIM cards can be purchased  online  and sent to an Austrian postal address. Yesss! starter packs are available in Rewe Group stores (Billa, Billa Plus, BIPA, etc.), as well as in Libro stores, post offices and some gas stations.

It is also available as an eSIM for  eligible devices  . You can currently order a new eSIM with a standard data plan only, one of the mobile data plans, or one of the special mobile data plans. If you need an eSIM with a data plan only, you can order it with a standard data plan and then switch to a data-only plan. The eSIM will be delivered via email.

The minimum online top-up amount is €10; larger amounts can be topped up in increments of €1 up to €100. This applies to both  www.yesss.at  and  onlineaufladen.at  . Top-up vouchers are available in amounts of €10 and €20 in 15,000 stores nationwide. You can top up your balance online, in the yesss! app or by sending an SMS message “LB <your voucher code>” to 810820. You can check your balance online, in the yesss! app or by sending an SMS message “gut” to 810820.

Replenishment via credit card (Visa and Mastercard) is available (one-time, monthly or automatic).

Prepaid card vs. contract

All yesss! plans are available with both pre-paid and post-paid plans.

If you order a physical or eSIM card online, be sure to order a “Wertkarte” (=prepaid) and not a “Vertrag” (postpaid) to avoid having to cancel your subscription.

All starter kits available in the store are prepaid by default.

Registration

To register, go  to the website  and select  Foto-Identverfahren.  You will need a camera and a reliable internet connection, and you will need to take a passport photo and a selfie during the process. You can also do this with your passport at post offices, A1 stores and other stores (fees may apply).

International roaming  (must enable data roaming before use)

Yesss! offers “roam like at home” within the EU, but data roaming is disabled by default. Before you can use data roaming, you need to activate it by sending an SMS with the text “roaming daten ein” to 810820 (or +43 681 810820 if you are already outside Austria). Alternatively, you can activate data roaming in the yesss! Kontomanager (  online  or in the app).

Please note that  unlimited  and  unlimited 5G plans  are locked in international roaming.

The roaming package called “Roaming Surf Paket” gives you 1 GB of data for travel to 29 countries: Albania, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Bosnia, China, Egypt, Georgia, Gibraltar, Greenland, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Montenegro, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, USA (all 50 states), United Arab Emirates and UK. The package can be purchased multiple times during a billing cycle. It is also possible to combine the package, which means you can purchase it multiple times in advance – for example: If you order 2 packages at the same time, you get 2 GB of data, which you can use for 14 days. The roaming package costs 4.99 euros and is valid for 7 days, and if you want to extend its validity, you need to renew it manually. You can find this roaming package on the following page (in German):  https://www.yesss.at/tarifoptionen/roaming-surf

From 1 June 2021, the UK is no longer part of the EU roaming zone. When roaming in the UK, you will be charged the high Zone 1 rates or you can use the Roaming Surf package.

Roaming in the EU

Free roaming is available in the EU, EEA and UK for all tariff plans except  Internet  tariff, Smart mini and  Smart Control  . However, HoT applies a strict 4-month limit for continuous roaming at domestic rates. Additionally, when roaming in some countries, the service may be limited to 3G instead of 4G/LTE.

For users with low internet usage, the per-megabyte rate is still one of the lowest in Europe. A surcharge of €0.0072/MB can be added to the standard domestic rate of €0.009/MB, making it €0.0162/MB when roaming in the EU without further restrictions.

More information

  • For some devices, data roaming needs to be enabled, as this MVNO may be recognized as a roaming network.  If you have data roaming enabled, be careful near the Swiss border, as Swiss roaming costs an exorbitant €15.36 per MB (!!!).  It is therefore better to select the network manually and lock it to HoT or Magenta.
  • On some older devices, the network name appears as “tele.ring” instead of HoT, T-Mobile, or Magenta.

To be able to use VoLTE and VoWiFi, make sure your phone is using the internet.t-mobile.at access point instead of the old webaut access point.

Spusu  (on 3 “Drei”)

Spusu is a brand of the virtual mobile operator Mass Response, which started operating on the Drei network in 2015. In 2016, 4G/LTE was added and offline sales of prepaid SIM cards began. Spusu is an abbreviation of the German phrase “  sp  rich  u  nd  su  rf” (“speak and surf”). Spusu is the second most successful virtual mobile operator brand after HoT (mainly due to its postpaid tariffs). Spusu has access to all 4G bands on the Drei network (=3).

Availability

Their starter pack (called ”  Spusu Wertkarte  “) is available  online  for delivery to an Austrian address, as well as in over 1,000 tobacconists (called  Trafiken  ) across the country. It sells for 20 euros, including the same credit, and can be registered there.

It is also available as an eSIM card for most eSIM-enabled devices  (see list of unsupported devices)  . A foreign passport can be used for registration and online purchases. Any Austrian address, such as a hotel, can be used. The eSIM card will be delivered by email.

To activate, you need to send an SMS with a 6-digit PIN to 0670 670 671. The PIN will be sent by email together with the eSIM card. This SMS must be sent from Austria, which limits activation outside Austria.

You can top up your account with 10, 20, 30 and 50 euro vouchers sold at these tobacconists, by bank transfer (SEPA account required), credit card or Paysafecard  online  . You will receive a free 2 GB bonus on your first top-up.

Default rate

They don’t sell any prepaid packages for voice, text or data, but they do offer a very cheap default rate called  spusu Wertkarte  .

  • for data €0.004 per MB (equivalent to a low €4 per GB, billing in 1 KB increments) on 4G+ up to network limit
