Belgian postal codes are numeric and consist of four digits. The first digit indicates the province (except for 3xxx numbers shared by East Flemish Brabant and Limburg, 6xxx numbers shared by Hainaut and Luxembourg, and 1xxx numbers shared by Brussels-Capital Region, West Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant). The more zeros there are, the more populous the city in that province is. For example: Brugge is the capital and largest urban centre of the coastal province of West Flanders, so the area code is 8000, and the second largest city is Kortrijk, which has the area code 8500. When entering an address, the postal code comes before the place name.
Special numbers are reserved for EU institutions, NATO headquarters, public and commercial broadcasters (RTBF, RTL TVI, VRT and VTM), parliaments and other public institutions.
Correct Belgian postal codes are indicated before the municipality or region of the address (e.g. “8500 Kortrijk”). Although often misused, Bpost guidelines explicitly require that the country code not be added before the postal code (e.g. “B-8500” instead of “8500”), similar to the Universal Postal Union’s address definition S42.
The current four-digit postal code system has been in place since 1969.
